Mālī kiriṭī kāyūrīti idaṃ satthari veḷuvane viharante kūṭavinicchayikapetaṃ ārabbha vuttaṃ.
“Wearing garlands, a diadem, armlets…” This was spoken by the Teacher while dwelling in Veḷuvana, concerning the peta who was a crooked judge.
Mālī kiriṭī kāyūrī (Đeo vòng hoa, đội vương miện, đeo vòng tay) – câu chuyện này được Đức Thế Tôn kể khi Ngài trú tại Veluvana, liên quan đến một ngạ quỷ quan tòa gian lận.
Tadā bimbisāro rājā māsassa chasu divasesu uposathaṃ upavasati, taṃ anuvattantā bahū manussā uposathaṃ upavasanti.
At that time, King Bimbisāra observed the Uposatha on six days of the month, and many people, following him, also observed the Uposatha.

Rājā attano santikaṃ āgatāgate manusse pucchati – ‘‘kiṃ tumhehi uposatho upavuttho, udāhu na upavuttho’’ti?
The king asked the people who came to him, “Have you observed the Uposatha, or not?”
Nhà vua hỏi những người đến gặp mình: ‘‘Các ngươi đã giữ giới uposatha chưa, hay là chưa giữ?’’
Tatreko adhikaraṇe niyuttakapuriso pisuṇavāco nekatiko lañjagāhako ‘‘na upavutthomhī’’ti vattuṃ asahanto ‘‘upavutthomhi, devā’’ti āha.
There was a certain official appointed to legal cases, a slanderer, deceitful, and a bribe-taker, who, being unable to say, “I have not observed it,” replied, “I have observed it, sire.”
Trong số đó, có một người đàn ông được giao việc xét xử, lời nói độc ác, gian xảo, nhận hối lộ, không dám nói ‘‘Tôi chưa giữ’’, bèn thưa: ‘‘Tâu Đại vương, tôi đã giữ rồi’’.
Atha naṃ rājasamīpato nikkhantaṃ sahāyo āha – ‘‘kiṃ, samma, ajja tayā upavuttho’’ti?
Then his friend, as he left the king’s presence, asked him, “Friend, have you observed it today?”

‘‘Bhayenāhaṃ, samma, rañño sammukhā evaṃ avocaṃ, nāhaṃ uposathiko’’ti.
“Friend, I spoke thus in the king’s presence out of fear. I am not an Uposatha observer.”

Atha naṃ sahāyo āha – ‘‘yadi evaṃ upaḍḍhuposathopi tāva te ajja hotu, uposathaṅgāni samādiyāhī’’ti.
Then his friend said to him, “If that is so, then at least let it be a half-Uposatha for you today. Take up the Uposatha precepts.”
Người bạn bèn nói với anh ta: ‘‘Nếu vậy, hôm nay bạn hãy giữ nửa ngày uposatha đi, hãy thọ trì các giới uposatha’’.
So tassa vacanaṃ ‘‘sādhū’’ti sampaṭicchitvā gehaṃ gantvā abhutvāva mukhaṃ vikkhāletvā uposathaṃ adhiṭṭhāya rattiyaṃ vāsūpagato rittāsayasambhūtena balavavātahetukena sūlena upacchinnāyusaṅkhāro cutianantaraṃ pabbatakucchiyaṃ vemānikapeto hutvā nibbatti.
He assented to his friend’s words, saying, “Very well,” and went home. Without eating, he cleansed his mouth, resolved upon the Uposatha, and went to bed for the night. Due to a violent wind caused by an empty stomach, his life-span was cut short by a spear-like pain, and immediately after passing away, he was reborn as a celestial peta in a mountain cave.
Anh ta ‘‘Tốt lắm’’ và chấp nhận lời bạn, về nhà, không ăn gì, súc miệng, thọ trì uposatha, và khi đi ngủ vào ban đêm, do một cơn đau bụng dữ dội do dạ dày rỗng gây ra, mạng sống của anh ta bị cắt đứt, và ngay sau khi chết, anh ta tái sinh làm một ngạ quỷ vimāna trong một hang núi.
So hi ekarattiṃ uposatharakkhaṇamattena vimānaṃ paṭilabhi dasakaññāsahassaparivāraṃ mahatiñca dibbasampattiṃ.
Indeed, merely by observing the Uposatha for one night, he obtained a mansion accompanied by ten thousand celestial maidens and great divine splendor.
Chỉ vì giữ giới uposatha một đêm, anh ta đã đạt được một cung điện với mười ngàn thiên nữ vây quanh và một sự giàu sang thần thánh vĩ đại.
Kūṭavinicchayikatāya pana pesuṇikatāya ca attano piṭṭhimaṃsāni sayameva okkantitvā khādati.
However, due to his crooked judgments and slander, he himself gouges out and eats the flesh from his own back.

Taṃ āyasmā nārado gijjakūṭato otaranto disvā –
The Venerable Nārada, descending from Gijjhakūṭa, saw him and asked:

‘‘Mālī kiriṭī kāyūrī, gattā te candanussadā;
“Adorned with garlands, a diadem, and armlets, your limbs are smeared with sandalwood.
‘‘Ngươi đeo vòng hoa, đội vương miện, đeo vòng tay, thân thể ngươi thoa đầy hương chiên đàn;
Pesuññamusāvādena, nikativañcanāya ca.
Through slander, false speech, deceit, and trickery.
Bằng lời nói đâm thọc, nói dối, bằng sự gian xảo và lừa dối.
‘‘Tayidaṃ tayā nārada sāmaṃ diṭṭhaṃ, anukampakā ye kusalā vadeyyuṃ;
“This has been seen by you yourself, Nārada, by those compassionate and skillful ones who would speak (words of admonition).
‘‘Này Nārada, điều này ngươi đã tự mình nhìn thấy, những bậc thiện lành có lòng từ bi sẽ khuyên răn;
499. Tattha mālīti māladhārī, dibbapupphehi paṭimaṇḍitoti adhippāyo.
