Tatra kho bhagavā…pe… etadavoca – ‘‘kiñcāpi, bhikkhave, rājā cakkavattī* catunnaṃ dīpānaṃ issariyādhipaccaṃ rajjaṃ kāretvā kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati devānaṃ tāvatiṃsānaṃ sahabyataṃ, so tattha nandane vane accharāsaṅghaparivuto dibbehi ca pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappito samaṅgībhūto paricāreti, so catūhi dhammehi asamannāgato, atha kho so aparimuttova* nirayā aparimutto tiracchānayoniyā aparimutto pettivisayā aparimutto apāyaduggativinipātā.
There the Blessed One…pe… said this: “Even if, monks, a Wheel-Turning Monarch rules over the dominion and sovereignty of the four continents, and upon the breakup of the body, after death, reappears in a good destination, a heavenly world, in the companionship of the Tāvatiṃsa devas, where he is surrounded by a host of celestial nymphs in the Nandana grove, endowed and provided with the five divine sensual pleasures – he is not endowed with four qualities, and thus he is not freed from hell, not freed from the animal realm, not freed from the realm of ghosts, not freed from the plane of misery, the bad destination, the lower realms.
Ở đấy, Thế Tôn…pe… đã nói như sau: “Này các Tỳ-khưu, dù cho một vị Chuyển Luân Vương (Cakkavattirājā) trị vì vương quốc với quyền uy tối thượng trên bốn châu lục, sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, sanh lên cõi thiện thú, cõi trời, làm bạn với chư thiên Ba mươi ba cõi, ở đó vị ấy được các nhóm tiên nữ vây quanh, được hưởng thụ năm dục công đức của chư thiên một cách đầy đủ, nhưng nếu vị ấy không thành tựu bốn pháp, thì vị ấy chưa được giải thoát khỏi địa ngục, chưa được giải thoát khỏi loài súc sanh, chưa được giải thoát khỏi cõi ngạ quỷ, chưa được giải thoát khỏi khổ cảnh, ác thú, đọa xứ.
Kiñcāpi, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako piṇḍiyālopena yāpeti, nantakāni ca dhāreti, so catūhi dhammehi samannāgato, atha kho so parimutto* nirayā parimutto tiracchānayoniyā parimutto pettivisayā parimutto apāyaduggativinipātā’’.
“Monks, even if a noble disciple lives on almsfood and wears rags, if he is endowed with four qualities, then he is freed from hell, freed from the animal realm, freed from the realm of hungry ghosts, freed from the plane of misery, the bad destinations, the lower realms.”
Này các Tỷ-kheo, dù một vị Thánh đệ tử sống bằng cách khất thực, mặc y phấn tảo, nếu vị ấy đầy đủ bốn pháp này, thì vị ấy được giải thoát khỏi địa ngục, giải thoát khỏi cảnh giới súc sanh, giải thoát khỏi cảnh giới ngạ quỷ, giải thoát khỏi khổ cảnh, ác thú, đọa xứ.

“By which four?
Thế nào là bốn pháp ấy?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti – ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā’ti.
Here, monks, a noble disciple is endowed with unwavering faith in the Buddha: ‘Indeed, the Blessed One is Arahant, Perfectly Awakened, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, Fortunate, Knower of the world, unsurpassed tamer of trainable people, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One.’
Ở đây, này các Tỷ-kheo, một vị Thánh đệ tử đầy đủ lòng tịnh tín bất động đối với Đức Phật, rằng: ‘Đức Thế Tôn ấy là bậc A-la-hán, Chánh Đẳng Giác, đầy đủ Minh Hạnh, Thiện Thệ, Thế Gian Giải, Vô Thượng Sĩ, Điều Ngự Trượng Phu, Thiên Nhân Sư, Phật, Thế Tôn’.
Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti – ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhī’ti.
He is endowed with unwavering faith in the Dhamma: ‘The Dhamma is well expounded by the Blessed One, directly visible, immediate, inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise.’
Đầy đủ lòng tịnh tín bất động đối với Pháp, rằng: ‘Pháp do Đức Thế Tôn khéo thuyết giảng, thiết thực hiện tại, không có thời gian, đến để mà thấy, có khả năng hướng thượng, được người trí tự mình chứng ngộ’.
Saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti – ‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, yadidaṃ – cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā, esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassā’ti.
He is endowed with unwavering faith in the Saṅgha: ‘The Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples is practicing well, practicing uprightly, practicing for the Nibbāna, practicing properly; that is, the four pairs of men, the eight individual noble persons—this Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples is worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of gifts, worthy of reverential salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world.’
Đầy đủ lòng tịnh tín bất động đối với Tăng, rằng: ‘Chúng Tăng đệ tử của Đức Thế Tôn là những bậc hành trì chân chánh, những bậc hành trì ngay thẳng, những bậc hành trì đúng Pháp, những bậc hành trì xứng đáng, tức là bốn đôi tám bậc Thánh nhân. Chúng Tăng đệ tử của Đức Thế Tôn là những bậc đáng được cúng dường, đáng được hiếu kính, đáng được dâng lễ vật, đáng được chắp tay cung kính, là ruộng phước vô thượng của thế gian’.
Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viññuppasatthehi aparāmaṭṭhehi samādhisaṃvattanikehi.
He is endowed with the noble virtues: unbroken, unblemished, unspotted, untarnished, freeing, praised by the wise, ungrasped, conducive to concentration.
Vị ấy đầy đủ các giới hạnh được bậc Thánh yêu thích, không bị phá hoại, không bị sứt mẻ, không bị ô uế, không bị nhiễm ô, được tự do, được người trí tán thán, không bị chấp thủ, đưa đến định.
Imehi catūhi dhammehi samannāgato hoti.
He is endowed with these four qualities.
Vị ấy đầy đủ bốn pháp này.
Yo ca, bhikkhave, catunnaṃ dīpānaṃ paṭilābho, yo catunnaṃ dhammānaṃ paṭilābho catunnaṃ dīpānaṃ paṭilābho catunnaṃ dhammānaṃ paṭilābhassa kalaṃ nāgghati soḷasi’’nti.
Monks, the gain of the four great continents does not amount to a sixteenth part of the gain of these four qualities.”
Này các Tỷ-kheo, sự đạt được bốn châu lớn không đáng một phần mười sáu của sự đạt được bốn pháp này.
