I was a matted-hair ascetic named Kosiyo, of severe ascetic practice;

I lived alone, without a companion, on Nisabha at that time.

I did not eat fruits, roots, or leaves at that time;

I subsisted only on fallen, well-dropped leaves.

I did not corrupt my livelihood, even if I had to give up my life;

I pleased my own mind, I avoided improper seeking.

You will burn with fever, like an elephant driven out from its herd.

So will you, devoid of virtue, not shine anywhere.

You have no wealth laid up, neither from your mother nor from your father.

Thus will you live at home, but that is not agreeable to you.

Having given various Dhamma talks, I kept the mind away from evil.’

The Buddha, unequalled in form, then walked in the sky.

‘‘Like a fully bloomed Sāla king-tree, like lightning amidst thick clouds;

The Buddha, unequalled in knowledge, then walked in the sky.

‘‘With the complexion of pure gold, resembling a glowing acacia charcoal;

Like a radiant gem, he then walked in the sky.

Như viên ngọc sáng chói, lúc ấy Ngài đi kinh hành trên không trung.

‘‘Resembling pure Mount Kelāsa, like the moon on a full moon night;

Like the sun at midday, he then walked in the sky.

Như mặt trời giữa trưa, lúc ấy Ngài đi kinh hành trên không trung.

‘‘Seeing him walking in the sky, I then thought thus;

‘Is this being a deity, or is he a human?

Indeed, there is a mantra-verse; this must be the Teacher.’

‘‘Thus having reflected, I gladdened my mind;

I then gathered various flowers and perfumes.

I spoke this word to the foremost charioteer of men.

The Buddha, for seven days and nights, on that excellent flower-seat.

Đức Phật đã an tọa trên tòa sen bằng hoa tối thượng suốt bảy ngày đêm.

Having arisen from concentration, the Teacher, unsurpassed in the world;

Proclaiming my kamma, he spoke this word:

‘‘‘Cultivate recollection of the Buddha, the unsurpassed meditation;

Imaṃ satiṃ bhāvayitvā, pūrayissasi mānasaṃ.

Having cultivated this recollection, you will fulfill your mind’s desire.

A thousand times you will be a wheel-turning monarch, a king in the land.

You will experience all that—the fruit of recollection of the Buddha.

There will be no deficiency in your wealth—the fruit of recollection of the Buddha.

A Teacher named Gotama by clan will appear in the world.

The hero, ascended into the sky, like a king of swans in the firmament.

Having abandoned my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

A thousand times I was a wheel-turning monarch.

I experience excellent prosperity—the fruit of recollection of the Buddha.

Even if one were to recount it for a crore of eons, one could only tell a part of it.

"The five precepts were well-practiced by me, a poor ascetic.

By that virtue, today I am freed from all bonds.
